Donald Trump was seen for quite a long time as a punchline, the jokes about the excesses and the failures of the 1980s. And he had become, you know, a human shingle and a punchline.
I had a show that people thought used a laugh track. It wasn't; it was the real audience going crazy after everything that resembled a joke, that they could technically call a joke.
I'm not original, but I strive toward it as much as possible. I tried really hard on Weekend Update to do something that I considered original, which was, I tried to cut all cleverness out of the joke.
I tried to make the punchline as close to the setup as I could. And I thought that was the perfect thing. If I could make the setup and the punchline identical to each other, I would create a different kind of joke.
Jack Benny, Fred Allen. Their jokes were wonderful. It takes skill to be funny. The timing of Jack Benny was so fine. It is a form of genius for which we should be grateful.
I learned how to make jokes because I wanted to give people as much fun as they did, and I guess I did, too.
As you can tell from watching the show, I'm not a strong joke writer per se.
Clive [Oppenheimer] and I figured out that I'm the only one probably in the film industry who is clinically sane. I say that as a joke, but there's a grain of truth to it. I'm not a stupid daredevil who jumps into the crater of the volcano to get the closest close-up, I'm not one of those. And you have to be aware that you have a crew with you and you are responsible.
I'll joke all day, but once I get in the gym, I'm going to work hard.
I never used to be as good, you get better. I've just gotten better and quicker at figuring out the joke.
There were plenty of times some writers would make some kind of stupid joke to each other and then it was on TV that night or that week.
I was just doing it for fun. I was in college recording music as a joke, so I really didn't think that a career was feasible - being able to travel.
I don't want them hip white people coming up to me and calling me no n - - or telling me n - - jokes. I don't like it.
Basically I made her [ Sara Pocock] listen to funk music for a good month, a nonstop stream of George Clinton. I was talking about the art from...if you look at the art from George Clinton albums there are two or three artists he worked with...I made her listen to my album too so all the images are from jokes I made. I wanted it to look like the thoughts that are coming out of my brain which is what comedy is anyway.
As you go on you realize "Okay I know how to get laughs but am I saying things I want to say? Am I writing jokes that I like?" You get to a point that is that so you move on.
The running joke on set [of the Westworlds] was that everyone at some point thinks that they're Anthony Hopkins. Like, "Guys, I think I'm Dr. Ford. I'm Anthony Hopkins. That's the twist." We love all of the theories. Part of the fun of that show is figuring it out.
Lisa Joy is so incredible, and she's always on set making sure everyone is okay and being respectful. We have a zero-tolerance policy on that set [ in the Westworlds]. If anyone is inappropriate or makes you uncomfortable, they're literally gone in two seconds. It's no joke. It's very professional.
Donald Trump will be a tragedy, a sad joke in American history.
If people ask me about it, I think it would be great for me to be like, 'Look, [Kanye West] called me and told me the line before it came out. Like, joke's on you guys, we're fine'.
Celebrating the holidays in the White House over these past eight years has been a true privilege. We've been able to welcome over half a million guests... our outstanding pastry chefs have baked 200,000 holiday cookies... and Barack [Obama] has treated the American people to countless dad jokes.
I had a couple of decent laughs on Townies, but for the most part, delivering a joke that you just know is not funny is hard.
You can make jokes but [ George Clooney] is everything that anyone's ever said about him.
R2-D2 is like that, but I think because he doesn't speak actual words, his jokes don't land. It's really a hindrance. And the same with BB-8. But Artoo is a lot stronger.
I began as a true beginner, not knowing how to dance or perform. I just entered a local contest in town as a joke, because if you entered you got a free blouse and scarf.
I like to respond with jokes and to keep it as light as possible.
