• There was an Israeli artist who was in grad school with me. I remember trying to get to know him on a more personal level. He had moved to the Fairfax area, not realizing that it's a super Jewish part of L.A. He told me, I don't understand why American Jews feel this connection with me. • I've had and probably still have a lot of bad haircuts. My mom just sent me some pictures - I don't know why she did this - but she sent me some pictures of me when I was probably like 12. • Music is so incredible, the most healing force in the world along with love of course which all things are created and essentially are. I want to make films that can equal the energy experience of music, the experience of a record that sends your soul to heaven; a film can do this. I've seen films get in this area. • One time we stayed at a B&B, and there were a couple of hippies who had this nice little area and they let us sleep in their beds that they had in the back.Then the woman suggested we go out and lie on some cushions and look up at the stars and look for UFOs and she said, "You know, I do this all the time," and I was like, "Okay..." So there we are, lying there next to this amazing loch, and we're looking up in the stars and I don't really know what I was expecting, but to see some sort of metallic object.

• There is also a particular area of sleep called slow-wave sleep. I immediately liked this idea. It turns out this part of sleep is where the brain basically gets into step with itself and gets into this one single phase of these relatively slow brain waves - around 10 Hz or so - and the whole brain 'fires all at once'. This is a brilliant bit of sleep where we consolidate memory and learning, and memory is one of my obsessions really.

• A lot of girls will do regular crunches, when that is building muscle in the middle of your stomach on top of - right in the middle area, where you might not want it to be. There's certain types of sit-ups and crunches and moves that kind of build the core set of your muscles inside. • Music is very transporting. I'll hear a song for the first time and I rarely listen to the lyrics.
